On January 25, 2026, there was an art and music afternoon in Schoonhoven. In a packed living room, there was a varied program with singing, flute, guitar, banjo, and piano. Felt art was also discussed.
I improvised on the grand piano for my painting 'warm feelings'.
Why this painting?
The inspiration for this painting stems from an educational project I conducted in Northeast India. In a self-sufficient community, I visited an extended family living in a bamboo house on stilts. A huge fire burned in the hut, surrounded by colorfully dressed people. In what we might have considered a hopeless situation, I was overcome with a sense of happiness. I wanted to visualize this feeling in this painting. The canvas is very irregular, with a lot of paste, paper, straw, and lava dust.
Connection with music:
I tried to capture the crackling fire and a slowly descending sense of happiness in music. That feeling is a recognizable theme that keeps recurring.
In the after-party, I spoke with several visitors about the connection between image and sound. I heard that it can be enriching to hear "the story" behind a painting. The improvised music adds an extra dimension. Someone said, "That's how it really resonates with you."
